We arrive in December, the last month of this surprising and also conflictive year 2022. We are a few days away from celebrating Christmas, which many people describe as "the best time of the year", where the Western world, particularly Christianity, celebrates the Nativity or birth of Jesus.

But beyond the religious beliefs of each one, or even, in the absence of these, Christmas is a propitious time for serene reflection and family reunion to share, not just a table with food with our loved ones and friends , but even more important, the joy of living and the opportunity to thank, be it the Universe, Fate, Nature or a Power Superior to ourselves; all the gifts and blessings we have received during the course of this year, before welcoming a new one, loaded with faith and hope for the future.

In this sense, I have selected for this week, a trio of songs from various musical genres, but which have in common their theme around the celebrations of the month of December, particularly Christmas.

Now, without further ado, I invite you to relax and enjoy the musical selection that I share today on this platform.

Llegamos a Diciembre, el último mes de este sorpresivo y también, conflictivo año 2022. Estamos a pocos días de celebrar la Navidad, la que muchas personas describen como "la mejor época del año", donde el mundo occidental, particularmente el cristianismo, celebra la Natividad o el nacimiento de Jesús.

Pero más allá de las creencias religiosas de cada quien, o incluso, a falta de estas, la Navidad es un tiempo propicio para la reflexión serena y el reencuentro familiar para compartir, no sólo una mesa con alimentos junto a nuestros seres más queridos y amigos, sinó, más importante aún, la alegría de vivir y la oportunidad para agradecer, bien sea al Universo, al Destino, a la Naturaleza o a un Poder Superior a nosotros mismos; todos los dones y bendiciones que hemos recibido durante el transcurso de este año, antes de dar la bienvenida a uno nuevo, cargados de fe y esperanza en el porvenir.

En este sentido, he seleccionado para esta semana, un trío de temas de diversos géneros musicales, pero que tienen en común su temática en torno a las celebraciones del mes de Diciembre, particularmente la Navidad.

Ahora, sin mayores preámbulos, los invito a relajarse y disfrutar de la selección musical que hoy comparto por esta plataforma.

I Believe in Father Christmas - Greg Lake

I Believe in Father Christmas is a song by the late British musician Greg Lake, a founding member of the progressive rock groups King Crimson and Emerson, Lake & Palmer, with lyrics by poet and composer Peter Sinfield.

Although this song is often described as a Christmas song, this was not the original intention of Lake, who stated that he composed the song as a protest against the commercialization of Christmas. Sinfield, however, stated that the lyrics refer to the loss of childhood innocence and belief. Released in 1975, the song would reach number two on the UK singles chart, number 17 in Ireland and 98 in Australia.

While the song is against the commercialization of Christmas, it has also often been labeled or misinterpreted as an anti-religious song and, motivated to this, its author, Lake would be surprised with the success it achieved.

Lake teamed up with lyricist Sinfield to create something from a "Christmas" chord sequence he had composed.

The result was thoughtful, but also melodic: a humanistic, Christmassy song that invokes the spark of Christmas, creating, as Sinfield put it, "a picture-postcard Christmas, with morbid overtones."

I Believe in Father Christmas, que podría traducirse al español como "Creo en Papá Noel", es una canción del fallecido músico británico Greg Lake, miembro fundador de las agrupaciones de rock progresivo, King Crimson y Emerson, Lake & Palmer; que cuenta con la letra del poeta y compositor Peter Sinfield.

Aunque con frecuencia se suele calificar este tema como una canción de Navidad, esta no era la intención original de Lake, quien afirmó que compuso la canción a manera de protesta por la comercialización de la Navidad. Sinfield, sin embargo, declaró que la letra hace referencia a la pérdida de la inocencia y la creencia de la infancia. Publicada en 1975, el tema alcanzaría la posición número dos en la lista de sencillos del Reino Unido, el puesto número 17 en Irlanda y el 98 en Australia.

Si bien la canción está en contra de la comercialización de la Navidad, a menudo también se le ha calificado o malinterpretado como una canción antirreligiosa y, motivado a esto, su autor, Lake se sorprendería con el éxito que alcanzó.

Joy to the World / Mi Burrito Sabanero - Gaêlica

Gaêlica is a Venezuelan folk pop band with influences from celtic and world music.

Founded in 2001, it is a musical project that explores the fusion of diverse rhythms and traditional and contemporary instruments from different parts of the world, resulting in a universal and innovative concept aimed at all audiences.

Its name comes from a Celtic tribe known as Gaêlicos (Gaelic), who were among the first to inhabit the European continent, being their original language Gaelic, and motivated by the fact that the Celts chose to leave the chronicle of the existence of their people orally; the Gaelic dialect was very important.

The group has a dynamic, spontaneous, fresh and full of positive energy staging, which allows them to easily connect with the public. In 2013 they were nominated to the Pepsi Music Awards as "Refreshing Artist" and to the Latin Grammy Awards of the same year, in the category of "Best Folk Album".

Joy to the World is an English carol, composed in 1719 by British minister and hymn writer, Isaac Watts, with lyrics inspired by Psalm 98 celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. Today, the carol is usually sung with an arrangement of made in 1848 by American composer Lowell Mason.

On the other hand, Mi Burrito Sabanero (My Plainsman Little Donkey), also known as El Burrito de Belén (The Bethlehem Little Donkey), is a traditional Venezuelan aguinaldo (traditional Christmas music genre) composed by musician Hugo Blanco Manzo for the 1972 Christmas season. It was originally recorded by the Venezuelan folklorist Simón Díaz, being included in his album Las Gaitas de Simón where he is accompanied by the "Coral Infantil de Venezuela" (Children's Choir of Venezuela); and later, it was recorded with the Venezuelan children's musical group La Rondallita in November 1975 with the soloist voice of the child Ricardo Cuenci, being this last version, the one that reached great popularity in several countries of Latin America and Europe at the end of the decade of the 70s.

The American magazine, specialized in music, Billboard, has included it in its list of "The 100 Greatest Christmas Songs of All Time".

Unfortunately, I could not find on YouTube, a live performance of this incredible mix, where its member Gabriel Figueira plays a bagpipe, being probably one of the few, if not the only, interpreters of this peculiar musical instrument in Venezuela.

Su nombre proviene de una tribu Celta conocida como Gaêlicos, quienes estuvieron entre los primeros en habitar el continente Europeo, siendo su lengua original la Gaêlica, y motivado a que los celtas optaron dejar por vía oral la crónica de la existencia de su pueblo; el dialecto Gaêlica tuvo mucha importancia.

La agrupación cuenta con una puesta en escena dinámica, espontánea, fresca y llena de energía positiva, lo que les perite conectar fácilmente con el público. En el año 2013 fueron nominados a los Pepsi Music Awards como "Artista Refrescante" y al Latin Grammy Awards del mismo año, en la categoría de “Mejor Album Folklore”.

Peace on Earth / Little Drummer Boy - David Bowie & Bing Crosby

Peace on Earth / Little Drummer Boy is a Christmas song performed by the duo David Bowie and Bing Crosby. The Little Drummer Boy is a Christmas song written in 1941 by American teacher and composer Katherine Kennicott Davis, while the song and lyrics to Peace on Earth, were composed by Ian Fraser, Larry Grossman and Alan Kohan, and would be added to the song especially for this recording made in September 1977 for the television show "Bing Crosby's Merrie Olde Christmas", a few weeks before Crosby's death.

The single was a commercial success upon its release in 1982, reaching number three on the UK Singles Chart in the UK, becoming one of the best-selling singles of Bowie's career, with sales of over 400,000 units in the UK alone. The song has since become a Christmas classic in the U.S., Canada and the U.K. and has been cited by The Washington Post as "one of the most successful duets in the history of Christmas music", despite the marked difference in age.

According to co-writer Ian Fraser, Bowie was reluctant to sing Little Drummer Boy, stating, "I hate this song - is there anything else I can sing?" Fraser, in conjunction with composer Larry Grossman and the television special's screenwriter, Buz Kohan, would compose Peace On Earth as a counterpoint to Little Drummer Boy. Crosby would perform Little Drummer Boy, while the British artist would sing the new song Peace on Earth, which according to statements made after the television special aired, was performed after less than an hour of rehearsal.

This is my selection of the week. Somehow, I wanted to pay a brief tribute to the approaching celebration of the Christmas holidays, with a trio of songs that have in common the theme of Nativity, and all the feelings around this date, which has a great significance in the Western world.

Esta es mi selección de la semana. De alguna manera, quise rendir un breve tributo a la cercana celebración de las festividades decembrinas, con un trío de canciones que tienen en común la temática de la Navidad, y todos los sentimientos alrededor de esta fecha, que posee una gran significado en el mundo occidental.
