[Movie Review] A Remarkable Tale || Lo Nunca Visto (2019) [ENG/ESP]
Fuentejuela de Arriba is a small village located high in the Pyrenees Mountains in northern Spain. Like other Iberian villages, many of its inhabitants, particularly the young, have migrated to the cities in search of opportunities, so its population has been reduced to only 16 inhabitants, most of whom are elderly people who refuse to leave their roots.
Faced with this panorama, if the town does not somehow increase its population before the imminence of the communal census, which would only be by a miracle, it runs the risk of being annexed to Fuentejuela de Abajo, a neighboring town located further down the mountain, with which it would lose its scarce administrative autonomy, leaving its inhabitants at the mercy of the will of a mayor who does not arouse sympathy among the few neighbors.
A Remarkable Tale
A Remarkable Tale is a 2019 Spanish comedy, directed and scripted by Marina Seresesky, an Argentine actress, screenwriter and director based in Spain.
The main cast of the film includes, among others, the actors:
- Carmen Machi, as Teresa.
- Pepón Nieto, as Jaime.
- Kiti Mánver, as Encarnita.
- Jon Kortajarena, as Guiri.
- Jimmy Castro, as Calulu.
- Ricardo Nkosi, as Shukra.
- Montse Pla, as Latisha.
- Malcolm Treviño-Sitté, as Azquil.
Paco Tous, as Vicente Campello.
Teresa and her friend Jaime, desperately seek to attract tourists to the village, appealing, among other things, to the various preparations made with eggs laid by the neighbors' hens, but, as has been the custom for some time, the long-awaited tourists never arrive, plunging the villagers once again into despair.
Meanwhile, a group of four Africans who traveled to Spain under false pretenses to participate in a supposed dance festival; run half-naked through the snow, dressed only in tribal costumes, and hiding from time to time so as not to be detected. The group of fugitives is made up of three men and a woman, and have been described by local police authorities as "extremely dangerous", so they go to the various villages to warn the inhabitants of the danger they face.
Finally, the Africans manage to reach the outskirts of one of the houses in the village, but while they are looking for food, they are discovered by Teresa and Jaime, who watch them through the window, not knowing whether to call the police to turn them in. After a few minutes, Teresa decides to go out into the courtyard to try to talk to the frightened fugitives who communicate with each other in a strange dialect.
Finally, after discovering that at least two of them spoke Spanish, and even the woman in the group had studied journalism at a university in her native country, Teresa decides to invite them inside her home, where she offers them warm clothes and food. Jaime, completely frightened, urges his friend to call the local authorities in order to get rid of these unwanted visitors, while Teresa, on the other hand, knowing that they are only illegal immigrants who wish to remain in Spain rather than be deported to their nation of origin, devises a plan to save the town, counting on the help of the refugees, for which she decides to divide them between the house of Jaime, the house of Guiri, the only young man in town, who had tried unsuccessfully to establish a "hippie commune" in his house, and finally, Teresa, who would house one of them.
At the next session of the local council, finally Teresa and Jaime introduce the African immigrants to their fellow citizens as the new inhabitants who would save Fuentejuela de Arriba from annexation, and consequently, from the loss of the administrative autonomy they enjoyed. However, the elderly settlers, most of whom have only seen "blacks" in television documentaries practicing cannibalism, are dismayed and reluctant to the interracial integration proposed by Teresa, even if it costs them their autonomy.
In the rest of the film, and after some jocular situations, several themes are revealed that are approached in a very light way, such as: the provincial mentality of the inhabitants of rural Spain, illegal immigration, bidirectional or two-way racism, that is, from whites to blacks and from blacks to whites; enclosed homosexuality, and finally, interracial love; which ultimately allows to save the people from an uncertain future.
Personal Appreciation
Regarding the Spanish comedy "A Remarkable Tale", I could highlight the following:
It is a light comedy, without major pretensions, and very far from any option to any nomination of any festival, but it counts with the good performance of Carmen Machi in her character of Teresa, on whom falls the major responsibility of the plot. It also has an acceptable level of direction, both cinematographically and photographically.
The script is weak, and at times predictable. The themes, which include, among others, racism, homosexuality and interracial love; are treated superficially, it could not be otherwise, since it is a comedy.
There are numerous clichés in the film, such as the allusion to the size of the virile member of one of the African fugitives, and others, which may make the viewer laugh, smile or, in the worst case, be disgusted or rejected by a part of the audience that does not enjoy this type of humor.
It is likely that if you have a wide range of options, you would not choose this film, even so, I enjoyed it because my expectations regarding it were not high, besides, the selected location was in accordance with the script, and personally, I like the houses built with stones and the surrounding landscapes, but I repeat, this is only a personal appreciation.
It is possible that the script and the characters could have been used to better advantage, but perhaps it was not the intention of the scriptwriter and the filmmakers, or they simply did not know how to do it.
The film is currently available on Netflix, in its original language, Spanish, with English and Spanish subtitles.
Finally, I am not a film critic, nor could I describe myself as a cinephile, I am just a person looking for recommendations and who occasionally enjoys movies. Fuentejuela de Arriba es un pequeño poblado ubicado en lo alto de la Cordillera de los Pirineos, al norte de España. Al igual que otros pueblos ibéricos, muchos de sus habitantes, en particular los jóvenes, han emigrado a las ciudades en busca de oportunidades, por lo cual, su población se ha visto reducida a tan solo 16 habitantes, la mayoría de los cuales, son personas de avanzada edad que se niegan a abandonar sus raíces.
Ante este panorama, el pueblo de no incrementar de alguna manera su población ante la inminencia del censo comunal, lo cual sólo sería por un milagro; corre el riesgo de ser anexado a Fuentejuela de Abajo, un poblado vecino ubicado más abajo de la montaña, con lo cual, perdería su escasa autonomía administrativa, quedando sus habitantes a merced de la voluntad de un alcalde que no despierta simpatías entre los pocos vecinos.
Lo Nunca Visto
Lo Nunca Visto es una comedia española del año 2019, que cuenta con la dirección y guión de Marina Seresesky, una actriz, guionista y directora argentina radicada en España.
En el reparto principal de la cinta destacan, entre otros, los actores:
- Carmen Machi, como Teresa.
- Pepón Nieto, como Jaime.
- Kiti Mánver, como Encarnita.
- Jon Kortajarena, como Guiri.
- Jimmy Castro, como Calulu.

Teresa y su amigo Jaime, buscan desesperadamente atraer turistas a la aldea, apelando, entre otros aspectos, a las diversas preparaciones elaboradas con huevos que ponen las gallinas de los vecinos, sin embargo, como ha sido costumbre desde hace algún tiempo, los tan esperados turistas nunca llegan, sumergiendo a sus pobladores una vez más en la desesperanza.
Mientras tanto, un grupo de cuatro africanos que viajaron a España bajo engaño para participar en un supuesto festival de danza; corren semidesnudos entre la nieve, ataviados tan solo con trajes tribales, y ocultándose de vez en cuando para no ser no detectados. El grupo de fugitivos está integrado por tres hombre y una mujer, y han sido descritos por las autoridades policiales locales como "extremadamente peligrosos", por lo que acuden a los diversos poblados para advertir a sus habitantes ante el peligro que les acecha.
Finalmente, los africanos logran llegar hasta las afueras de una de las viviendas de la aldea, sin embargo, mientras estaban en búsqueda de comida, son descubiertos por Teresa y Jaime, quienes los observan a través de la ventana, sin saber si llamar a la policía para entregarlos. Pasados algunos minutos, Teresa decide salir al patio para intentar hablar con los asustados fugitivos quienes se comunican entre sí en un extraño dialecto.
Finalmente, tras descubrir que al menos dos de ellos hablaban español, e incluso, la mujer del grupo había estudiado periodismo en una universidad de su país natal, Teresa decide invitarlos a pasar al interior de su vivienda, donde les ofrece ropa y comida caliente. Jaime, completamente asustado, exhorta a su amiga llamar a las autoridades locales con el fin de librarse de esos visitantes indeseables, mientras Teresa, por el contrario, conociendo que tan solo son inmigrantes ilegales que desean permanecer en España en lugar de ser deportados a su nación de origen; concibe un plan para salvar al pueblo, contando con la ayuda de los refugiados, para lo cual, decide repartirlos entre la casa de Jaime, la casa de Guiri, el único joven de la localidad, y quien había tratado infructuosamente de establecer una "comuna hippie" en su casa, y finalmente, Teresa, quien albergaría a uno de ellos.
En la próxima sesión del concejo local, finalmente Teresa y Jaime presentan a sus conciudadanos a los inmigrantes africanos como los nuevos habitantes que salvarían a Fuentejuela de Arriba de la anexión, y en consecuencia, de la pérdida de la autonomía administrativa de la que disfrutaban. Sin embargo, los ancianos pobladores, quienes en su mayoría, solo han visto "negros" en documentales televisivos practicando el canibalismo, se ven consternados y reacios a la integración interracial que propone Teresa, aunque eso les cueste la autonomía.
En el resto de la película, y luego de situaciones jocosas, se ponen de manifiesto diversos temas que son abordados de forma muy ligera, como lo son: la mentalidad provinciana de los habitantes de la España rural, la inmigración ilegal, el racismo bidireccional o en dos direcciones, es decir, de los blancos hacia los negros y de estos hacia los blancos; el homosexualismo enclosetado, y finalmente, el amor interracional; lo cual permite en última instancia, salvar al pueblo de un futuro incierto.
Apreciación Personal
Con respecto a la comedia española "Lo Nunca Visto", podría destacar lo siguiente:
Es una comedia ligera, sin mayores pretensiones, y muy alejada de cualquier opción a cualquier nominación de algún festival, pero cuenta con la buena actuación de Carmen Machi en su personaje de Teresa, sobre quien recae la mayor responsabilidad de la trama. También cuenta con un nivel de dirección aceptable, tanto en lo cinematográfico como en lo fotográfico.
El guión es flojo, y en ocasiones previsible. Los temas, que incluyen, entre otros, el racismo, la homosexualidad y el amor interracial; son tratados superficialmente, no podía ser de otra manera, puesto que es una comedia.
Existen numerosos clichés en la cinta, como lo es, la alusión al tamaño del miembro viril de uno de los fugitivos africanos, y otros mas, que pueden arrancar en el espectador alguna carcajada, una sonrisa o, en el peor de los casos, una muesca de asco o de rechazo por parte de alguna parte de la audiencia que no disfruta este tipo de humor.
Es probable que si dispones de un amplio abanico de opciones, no escogerías esta película, aún así, yo la disfruté porque mis expectativas con respecto a la misma, no eran elevadas, además, la locación seleccionada era acorde con el guión, y en lo personal, me gustan las viviendas construidas con piedras y los paisajes circundantes, pero repito, esto es solo una apreciación personal.
Cabe la pregunta de si se pudo sacar mayor provecho del guión y de los personajes, es probable, pero tal vez no era la intención de la guionista y de los realizadores, o sencillamente, no supieron como hacerlo.
La película está disponible actualmente en Netflix, en su idioma original, español, con subtítulos en inglés y español.
Finalmente, no soy crítico cinematográfico, tampoco podría describirme como cinéfilo, tan solo, soy una persona en búsqueda de recomendaciones y que disfruta ocasionalmente del cine.
