Took a walk in the back yard yesterday and came across This....
Big part of a White Pine had snapped off from the 50 mile an hour winds of the snow storm that blew through a few days ago...
This is one of over 800 White Pine trees I planted in 1976...
I only had spaced them five feet apart when they were planted back then.. This made them tall and narrow with the runts dying from the shade of the strong aggressive ones...
The tree broke at where the tree had split into two leaders ...Pine trees grow straight up from the lead stem an only spit if the leader dies for some reason...
Back when these trees were growing White Pine Weevils, bugs that suck the sap out of the top leaders, killed many leaders forcing side branches to continue the trees growth upward.. This then creates a weak crotch and two leading tree trunks..
The trunk that broke off was the larger of the two.
