Short stroll down to Conscience point where the first settlers of Southampton Long Island are said to have arrived....
A small group of Pilgrims from Lynn Massachusetts landed here in May of 1640. They left Massachusetts due to the warring Indian tribes in the area.
The Shinnecock tribe welcomed them since both were hated by the northern tribes.
Conscience point is inside a small harbor in the Hamlet of North Sea. They then traveled south and settled just east of present day main street of Southampton. Today the area is called "Old Town"
The point got it's name it is said when one of the newly arrived uttered, ”For conscience’s sake, we’ve hit land!.”
The point is a finger like peninsular sticking out into the sallow harbor waters.
The western side of the harbor is a Federal protected wildlife area, which lets you see how the area looked 400 years ago.
The area can only be accessed by special permission.
This large boulder was place here, June 13, 1910 during the celebration of Founders’ Day....
