You're ruining my perfect hell! Look at what you've done! It's not nice now!

I remember something like a plot twist in a D&D campaign some years ago where our high-level dudes had a meeting with the ruler of the hellish dimensions. It was in an underground pool of mercury or some such liquid and it turned out to be an AI gone rogue. Spoiling the perfect illusion.
