I can survive on my own!, Anibal would reply every time someone asked him why he didn't start his life over.
After a 5-year relationship, a daughter, and many disagreements, it was Camila who said enough was enough. Anibal's quirks and his obsession with finding a replica of his mother in another woman led her to prefer a long, drawn-out divorce to staying in a relationship where she felt nothing anymore: no love, no hate, no contempt... nothing!
Anabel, the daughter, was left in Camila's care, and even though she tried hard to keep the father-daughter relationship going, all she got in return were negative responses from the girl, which Anibal interpreted as her way of suggesting that Anabel stop loving him too.
As the years passed, the distance between them grew until, during her teenage years, Anabel even decided to stop using her father's last name, which drove the emotional dagger Anibal was carrying even deeper into his heart.
That's why he decided it was better to be alone, unattached to anything or anyone, as if he were waiting for death to come knocking at his door at any moment.
At work, his colleagues would joke that he should become a priest, and even though he found it somewhat annoying, he would smile at the constant comments about his decision. In the end, everyone does what they want with their lives, right?
One day, on one of those days when he thought it would have been better to stay on bed, he bumps into Sonia, a girl who worked at the café on the corner of his house.
She was running late and, in her hurry, she didn't notice that he was coming out of the building. He helped her pick up her things, and at some point their fingers brushed against each other, causing an electric shock in both of them, but there was no time to think about any explanation for it, so when he finished helping her, he went straight to work.
This didn't go unnoticed by Anibal, even though the rest of the day was quite chaotic, so before going up to that lonely apartment, he decided to buy something to eat at the café, not knowing that Sonia was still there.
When he recognized her, he went over to say hello. He thought she would have left by then, but she told him she was working a double shift because money was tight at her house and this could help a little bit more.
The conversation was pleasant, so much so that he decided to eat there. Anibal was starting to realize how much he missed social interaction, beyond the cubicle divisions at his job.
When he got home, he felt a hard blow to the back of his neck, but it was nothing, no one... it was the loneliness that inhabited every corner of what had once been his home.
He made that café his regular eating spot, and Sonia was already starting to know his tastes, so when she saw him, she would order what she knew he would ask for. He always sat at the counter so he could talk to her while he ate and she organized the orders and ran the register.
That routine was like a sip of hope for him, and she also seemed to enjoy it, or at least that's what he wanted it to be.
A year later, Anibal gathers all his inner strength and decides to invite her out, he wanted to get to know her better, outside of her work, that woman who accompanied him during dinner. And it was that he had been so long without asking anything from anyone, that it really cost him too much to express each one of the words.
Sonia, with her usual smile, tells him that she can't accept it. And this refusal sounded like a challenge to him. Why couldn't she? Was it because she was his client? Outside of her work she wasn't!
Thousands of thoughts crowded inside his head, trying to give logic to that answer.
Every night, he asked her the same thing, and her response was exactly the same. It seemed like a learned script, it didn't vary in either the gestures or the resounding no that he received.
Anibal was going crazy! Why couldn't he? Was he so contemptible? But he didn't ask the reasons, it wasn't gentlemanly to behave in such a way.
That's when he decided not to insist anymore. That day he ate, paid, and said goodbye as if nothing, hoping to see a reaction in Sonia, but she behaved like every day, being friendly and cordial with everyone.
When he left, he decided to wait at the entrance to her building, until she came out and he could talk to her alone. Only the plans weren't as he imagined them.
A car parked at the door of the café, from which a tall, muscular man and two identical girls got out. She greeted them with great joy, first hugging the girls and then the man, whom she then kissed passionately. Everyone got into the car and left happy.
She's married and she has a family! the street, the walls, and even the lighthouse that illuminated him shouted. In Anibal's mind, everything became cloudy, he remembered the days when Camila was pregnant, the first years of Anabel, of whom later he would know nothing more, except that she left the country, also remembered the fights and reconciliations, and with these thoughts, as best he could, he entered his house.
Tears were not long in coming. Why did hope act so cruelly with him?
As he closed the door, that blow to the back of the head, one stronger than the one he received before, made him fall. There was no time to turn the key in the lock, and it didn't matter.
But this time it wasn't loneliness who hit him... a stroke, decided that Anibal would never be alone again.
