Even if our idea is wonderful, if we don’t take the time to observe our surroundings, we might end up trying to sell bottles of life in a cemetery. That’s why it’s essential to assess the environment where we want to operate—or, if we’re working on social media, to identify the right followers to target and determine who we should reach with our message.

Before getting started, it’s always important to see what’s already out there and what’s missing in the market. That said, improving upon something that’s already established can also be a good option if you do it right—especially since it’s a formula that others have already proven will be accepted.

Keeping your eyes open will allow you to spot business opportunities if you focus on finding advantages within the market—and even more so if you approach it without preconceived notions. This is because, when we’re set on a particular idea, we’re often unable to change our minds and adapt to the market’s needs.

Learning from others’ failed ideas can also help you understand market behavior, so you can avoid making the same mistakes and determine whether to replicate or discard a particular idea.

Just a few days ago, a coworker told me she’s going to start selling ice cream from her home, where she has a small kiosk that her son runs in the afternoons. She was very excited—she got quotes, made her purchases, and jumped right into promoting it—but she didn’t notice who else was doing the same thing.

To her surprise, there are at least five similar businesses near her location, which made her quite nervous about the future of her venture. However, she didn’t look into other options either, and left the future of her business up to chance since it’s a seasonal venture.

Selling ice cream during the summer season is already a good business in itself, but if you pay attention to how others present their products—their offers, promotions, and hours—it will give you a major advantage that could ultimately be the key to success.
