Agreed, and the limitations inspired some really cool ideas and art.

The pinnacle of run and gun games for me, Metal Slug, shows it is not raw computing power that mattered the most, and after the initial excitement of Duke Nukem 3D and Quake etc, I went off gaming for over a decade due to the 3D arms race, right up until I got back into retro computing.
