Hello, friends, today I want to talk to you about a Brazilian soap opera that caused a furore at the end of the 90's and that even after so much time, is remembered in Latin America with much affection, I saw it when it was premiered in 1996, and later I saw it again a few years ago and now that it is being rebroadcast on television I didn't want to miss the opportunity, and I also didn't want to miss this wonderful space to express my opinion about this great soap opera.
Hola, amigos, hoy quiero hablarles de una telenovela brasileña que causó furor a finales de los años 90, y que aún después de tanto tiempo, es recordada en latinoamérica con mucho cariño, yo la vi cuando fue estrenada en 1996, posteriormente volví a verla hace algunos años y ahora que la están retransmitiendo por televisión no quise desaprovechar la oportunidad, así como tampoco quise dejar de aprovechar este maravilloso espacio para expresarles a ustedes mi opinión acerca de esta grandiosa telenovela.
The first time I saw this soap opera I was twelve years old but I couldn't watch it to the fullest because my parents would send me out of the room when any violent or erotic scene was shown, they wouldn't even allow me to watch the soap opera but I insisted because I have always liked old period productions, especially when they are based on real characters, as in the case of Xica da Silva, a famous former Brazilian slave in the 18th century.
La primera vez que vi esta telenovela yo tenía doce años pero no pude verla a plenitud porque mis padres me mandaban a salir de la habitación cuando pasaban alguna escena violenta o de corte erótico, incluso no me permitían ver la telenovela pero yo insistía porque siempre me me han gustado las producciones de época, sobre todo cuando están basadas en personajes reales, como es el caso de Xica da Silva, famosa ex-esclava brasileña en el siglo XVIII.
The story of the soap opera shows us many important things, but the most notorious element is the hypocrisy that prevailed in the society of that time, carnal relations for example were only allowed within marriage and only for the purpose of begetting children, outside of marriage it was considered a great sin, However, men used to sexually abuse their slaves in order not to "disturb" their wives, or they would go to the village tavern in search of women, and black people were not allowed to enter a church, but they were forced to practice the Christian religion.
La historia de la telenovela nos muestra muchas cosas importantes, pero el elemento más notorio es la hipocresía que imperaba en la sociedad de esa época, las relaciones carnales por ejemplo solo estaban permitidas dentro del matrimonio y únicamente con el objetivo de engendrar hijos, fuera de ellas se consideraba un gran pecado, sin embargo, los hombres solían abusar sexualmente de sus esclavas para no "perturbar" a sus esposas, o asistían a la taberna del pueblo en busca de mujeres, por otra parte, las personas negras no tenían permitido entrar en una iglesia, no obstante se les obligaba a practicar la religión cristiana.
The story is so good that it leaves almost nothing out, we can see how the runaway slaves coordinated and planned rebellions from their organisation in the mountains which they called "quilombo". We can also see how the theme of the inquisition develops and how they carried out their terrifying interrogations in search of heretics.
La historia es tan buena que no deja casi nada por fuera, podemos ver como se coordinaban los esclavos fugitivos y planificaban rebeliones desde su organización en las montañas a la que llamaban "quilombo". También podemos ver como se desarrolla el tema de la inquisición y como llevaban a cabo sus terroríficos interrogatorios en busca de herejes.
One of the most significant characters, and one that definitely caused a furore, was the inquisitor himself, played masterfully by Dalton Vigh, I liked his performance because, without being aggressive, he generated a lot of fear, his movements were subtle and the tone of his voice was graceful and even tender, but when he smiled he did not do it with his eyes, they gave away his true evil and dark nature.
Uno de los personajes más significativos y que definitivamente causó furor, fue el propio inquisidor, interpretado magistralmente por Dalton Vigh, me gustaba su actuación porque, sin necesidad de ser agresivo generaba mucho miedo, sus movimientos eran sutiles y el tono de su voz grácil e incluso tierno, pero cuando sonreía no lo hacía con los ojos, estos delataban su verdadera naturaleza malvada y oscura.
One of my favourite characters is Mr. José María, Count de la Barca, who despite being a funny character and to some extent a relief of tensions in the plot, also allows us to understand how hard life was for a homosexual person in the 18th century, not only were they judged by society, but they could end up in an interrogation room of the Inquisition and even be condemned to death for the crime of sodomy.
Uno de mis personajes favoritos es el señor José María, Conde de la Barca, que a pesar de ser un personaje gracioso y hasta cierto punto un alivio de tensiones en la trama, también nos permite comprender lo dura que era la vida para un homosexual en el siglo XVIII, no solo eran juzgados por la sociedad, sino que podían terminar en una sala de interrogatorios de la inquisición y hasta ser condenados a muerte por el delito de sodomía.
As for the performances, they were magnificent, I think that even the extras did a great job, each actor assumed the role that corresponded to him or her perfectly and had a great affinity with their character, but of all the actors and actresses who I must highlight is Drica Moraes who played Miss Violante Cabral, a villain in every sense of the word, an extremely cunning and hypocritical, cruel and bitter woman who manages to convey her feelings through the screen and it is not difficult to hate her.
En cuanto a las actuaciones, estas estuvieron magníficas, creo que hasta los extras hicieron un trabajo grandioso, cada actor asumió el rol que le correspondió a la perfección y tuvieron una gran afinidad con su personaje, pero de todos los actores a quien debo destacar es a Drica Moraes quien interpretó a la señorita Violante Cabral, una villana en toda la extensión de la palabra, una mujer extremadamente astuta e hipócrita, cruel y amargada que logra transmitir sus sentimientos a través de la pantalla y no te resulta difícil odiarla.
I think one of the most remarkable elements of this super Brazilian production is its soundtrack, as it perfectly reflects the essence of the era in which the soap opera is set, mostly composed of chamber music, sonnets, minuets, alegros and adagios, even using ancient instruments such as the lute and the harpsichord.
Creo que uno de los elementos más destacables de esta super producción brasileña es su soundtrack, ya que refleja a la perfección la esencia de la época en la que está ambientada la telenovela, en su mayoría está compuesto por música de cámara, sonetos minuetos, alegros y adagios, incluso usando instrumentos antiguos como el laud y el clavicordio.
Of all the songs, the one I like the most is the intro of the soap opera called "Xica rainha" (Xica queen) whose lyrics praise the main character, Xica da Silva. I love the baroque sounds that we can hear, but the video is much more impressive since, because according to
it is a succession of sacred images taken from the San Francisco de Asís temple in Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, images that were later animated. The intro of the telenovela scandalised many people at the time of its premiere in 1996 because instead of the Virgin of the Conception, who originally appeared in the dome of the church, Xica da Silva was dressed as the Virgin.
De todos los temas, el que más me gusta es la intro de la telenovela llamado "Xica rainha" (Xica reina) cuya letra enaltece a la protagonista, Xica da Silva. Amo los sonidos barrocos que podemos oír, pero el video es mucho más impactante ya que, según Wikipedia se trata de una sucesión de imágenes sacras extraídas del templo San Francisco de Asís en Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, imágenes que posteriormente fueron animadas. La intro de la telenovela escandalizó a muchas personas al momento de su estreno en 1996 porque en lugar de la virgen de la concepción que es la que aparece originalmente en la cúpula de la iglesia, estaba ubicada Xica da Silva vestida como la virgen.
Another theme I must highlight is "Minueto e Serenata" which corresponds to Mr. José María, the homosexual character I spoke about previously, this theme defines him to perfection, mentioning that he has a feminine soul and that among swords and foil he prefers fine silk.
Otro tema que debo destacar es "Minueto e Serenata" que es correspondiente al señor José María, el personaje homosexsual del que les hablé previamente, este tema lo define a la perfección, mencionando que él tiene un alma femenina y que entre espadas y floretes él prefiere la seda fina.
I don't know if you have already seen this soap opera or if you plan to see it, but I can only conclude this post by saying that it is a wonderful production like all the Brazilian ones, I give it a 10 out of 10 because despite being several years old since its premiere, it has aged very well for its historical theme approached from a raw but realistic point of view, without filters.
No sé si ustedes ya han visto esta telenovela o si planean verla, pero solo puedo concluir este post diciendo que es una maravillosa producción como todas las que hacen los brasileños, yo le doy un 10 de 10 ya que a pesar de tener varios años desde su estreno, ha envejecido muy bien por su temática histórica abordada desde un punto de vista crudo pero realista, sin filtros.
