I recently visited the bookstore again to see what I could find, and I discovered a book that really caught my eye—starting with the cover, which struck me as very enigmatic, though the blurb certainly did too.
Recientemente fui de nuevo a la librería a ver que me encontraba pro allí y descubrí un libro que llamó mucho mi atención incluso desde la portada, la cuál me pareció muy enigmática, pero desde luego también la reseña.
I generally don't care for science fiction stories, but this one had something that drew me in from the start. The novel tells the story of Alesh, the new queen of Éter; following the death of the previous queen, Patme, she consults the oracle and discovers a prophecy regarding peace and eternal life. The prophecy compels her to travel to Bellum—a warrior planet and enemy territory—where a peace proposal put forward by the chancellor turns out to be a trap. Yet, it is there that Alesh meets Erik, a captain in the opposing army, and cannot help but fall into an intense romance with him.
Por lo general no me gustan las historias de ciencia ficción pero esta tuvo algo que me atrajo desde el inicio. La novela nos habla de Alesh, la nueva reina de Éter, quién tras la muerte de la reina anterior, Patme, consulta el oráculo y descubre una profecía sobre la paz y la vida eterna y que por causa de ella debe viajar al planeta guerrero Bellum que para colmo es territorio enemigo, pero el canciller lanza una propuesta de paz que realmente resulta ser una trampa, pero allí Alesh conoce a Erik, el capitán del ejército contrario con el que no puede evitar vivir un intenso romance.
The novel pleasantly surprised me in many ways; generally, I am not drawn to romance or science fiction novels—nor to those narrated in the first person—but I think I am changing my mind lately after reading several stories by Edgar Allan Poe. This novel also uses that format, and I feel it creates a more intimate atmosphere where the main character expresses their own feelings and emotions—doubts, concerns, and even deepest fears. In this case, it is fascinating to see what is happening within Alesh’s turbulent heart and to witness that emotional conflict—the dilemma torn between love and revenge... Which weighs more?
La novela me sorprendió gratamente en muchos aspectos porque así como por lo general no suelen atraerme las novelas de romance o ciencia ficción, tampoco suelen atraerme als que están narradas en primera persona, pero últimamente creo que estoy cambiando de opinión luego de leer varios relatos de Edgar Allan Poe, esta novela también está narrada en ese formato y siento que le da un aura más íntima en el cuál el personaje principal expresa sus propios sentimientos y emociones como dudas e inquietudes, incluso sus miedos más profundos, en este caso es interesante conocer lo que sucede en el revolucionado corazón de Alesh y ese conflicto emocional ese dilema que se divide entre el amor y la venganza... ¿Qué pesa más?
The novel evidently also contains a clear critique of the system—particularly the political system and its manipulations—and the way it leads you to believe that everything done, whether questionable or not, is for the common good, when in reality, actions are taken solely for self-interest; war has long been manipulated by politicians under the pretext of a greater good that justifies collateral damage.
La novela evidentemente también contiene una clara crítica al sistema, en especial al sistema político y a sus manipulaciones, la manera en que te hacen creer que todo lo que hacen, cuestionable o no, es por el bien de todos, cuando en realidad solo destruyen para beneficios propios, desde siempre la guerra ha estado manipulada por los políticos con la excusa de un bien mayor que justifica los daños colaterales.
I like how Alesh is portrayed; she is a formidable woman—a true heroine—yet she isn't a "Mary Sue" (that literary archetype of a near-perfect character whom everyone loves and who never makes a mistake). No, Alesh is strong and determined, but she has her flaws and occasionally reveals her vulnerability. In fact, the characters across the board are a diverse bunch; none of them are flat or predictable.
Me gusta como es descrita Alesh, ella es una mujer de armas tomar, una heroína pero no es precisamente lo que se describe en literatura como una Mary Sue, es decir, un persona casi perfecto al que todos quieren y que nunca se equivoca, no, Alesh es una mujer fuerte yd decidida pero tiene sus defectos y de vez en cuando muestra su vulnerabilidad, y todos los personajes en general son muy variopintos, ninguno es plano o predecible
One of the things I enjoyed most was the plot twists based on mistrust and the enemy's secrets.
Una de las cosas que más disfruté fueron los giros argumentales que se basan en la desconfianza y los secretos del enemigo
Well, that’s all for today’s review. It is an easy-to-read novel—unpredictable most of the time—and its dynamic pace makes it impossible to get bored. Thank you very much for your attention.
