My great-great-grandfather arrived from Spain at the end of the 19th century. From Santander to the prosperous rural town in western Cuba, his skills were the means of earning a living for his family.

He never imagined that his work would remain for posterity on many of the town's facades, a testament to one of the lost trades whose beauty still endures.

Jerónimo Candina, my great-great-grandfather, was a master blacksmith. He and his brothers brought with them the secret of the manual arts, from metals, from riveting and forging to the finest goldsmithing and woodworking. Due to genetic reasons, I owe him my skills in craftsmanship, and in the visual arts and design in general.

Today I went out with my cell phone to capture those small, silent treasures he left behind for the town. His mark can be seen on the railings of spaces that were once used for public recreation, as well as on the decrepit facades of the mansions of the coffee and sugar bourgeoisie and the homes of ordinary villagers.

Mi tatarabuelo llegó de España a finales del siglo XIX. De Santander al próspero pueblito de campo en el occidente de Cuba, sus habilidades fueron la forma de ganar el sustento familiar.

Con esta muestra fotográfica pretendo ilustrar, un poco, parte de su trabajo y hacer mi entrada al #monomad Challenge. En ella busco la impresión monocromática como vehículo para resaltar los detalles, las líneas, el diseño creado para cada sitio .

Ha sido un placer viajar en el tiempo en busca de mis raices y poder compartir mi experiencia sensible con ustedes.
