Do you know who brought us from a world of darkness to light?
Last night, me and my friend were sitting and talking when suddenly the power went out and the room was filled with darkness. My friend panicked and said, "Oh, what will we do now? 馃ス"
I was surprised and asked her, "Just think, how did people live before electricity? How did they bear this darkness!"
Thank God for Thomas Edison, who made the light and gave us brightness.
My friend asked, "Who was Thomas Edison? 馃"
"What? You don鈥檛 know such a famous person??"
Thomas Edison was born on February 11, 1847, in Milan, a small town in Ohio, United States.
And the biggest thing is, he didn鈥檛 get many degrees like us, but he did something that amazed the whole world.
Thomas Edison was the seventh and last child in his family, and he became deaf in childhood.
"Deaf 馃槷???" My friend said in shock. "Then how did he invent the bulb??"
"Yes. Despite being deaf, he worked as a railway telegraph operator."
"Then at the age of 22, he went to New York for work."
"Then what happened???"
My friend picked up a cup of tea and gave it to me, asking with more curiosity.
"Then he got married to a woman named Mary, and they had 3 children. But..."
I took a deep breath and paused while sipping my tea.
"But...? But what? What happened then?" My friend got even more curious and leaned a little closer to me.
"But Thomas was a careless husband and father," I continued. "Mary died at the age of 29, and Thomas Edison had troubled relationships with his children for the rest of his life."
Edison also built a "Telegraph Factory" and "Menlo Park" in New York. People called Edison "The Wizard of Menlo Park."
Just then, the lights came back on. "Thank God!" My friend sighed deeply. She got up, turned on the courtyard light, and we both went and sat on the bench in the lawn outside.
My friend smiled at me and said, "He was such a brilliant man. He did so much by the age of 29. And here we are, 25 years old, and we have time for nothing except drinking tea and using mobile 馃槉. Okay, tell me more about what happened in Thomas Edison鈥檚 life?" She said, looking far at the moon.
"Then in 1876, he started working on an electrical system. It took decades to go from the light bulb to building an electricity network across the whole country.
Edison and his team could have made millions from bulbs, generators, and wiring, but due to competition with Westinghouse's AC system, he had to give in, and in the end General Electric was formed."
"Throughout his life, Edison worked with toxic and radioactive chemicals which ruined his health. He died on October 18, 1931. He lived about 84 years."
My friend let out a cold sigh. Her eyes were teary, but there was a faint smile on her lips. As if she was thanking Thomas Edison in her heart for giving us such a big blessing.
By then our tea was also finished and it was 12 o鈥檆lock at night. We got up from there and went back to our room to get ready to sleep.
