For a couple of years I've been buying the same box of ice cream from Target. It had been USD 3.64 for me during that time. The other day I went to buy the same ice cream. This time it cost me USD 4.94-- an increase of USD 1.30 for a rise in price of 35.71%!

As to why the government gets it wrong, that's not what's happening. It's not so much that government gets it wrong as it is the government needs to deceive us. Inflation measured today is done differently than it was in the 1980s, the last time the United Stated had this sort of economic situation.
