ENGLISH VERSION
Greetings and welcome dear readers of this prestigious platform, this time I would like to share a somewhat controversial topic that responds to traumatic psychological situations, where the system is able to block and suppress episodes as a defense mechanism against adverse situations, so that this type of content will be shared through the communities of @Stemsocial and @Cervantes, where the scientific approach becomes a figure in these outreach spaces.
In this sense, I will share with you an episode that happened in recent days, where my mother (Edith) after witnessing an act of violence, went into a kind of emotional shock that managed to destabilize her entire system, so that blood pressures rose dramatically reaching over 180 systolic and 120 diastolic level, in addition to the lack of control in her body where movements associated with repeated convulsions were repeated.
It was undoubtedly a dramatic scenario where at times we thought that a heart attack would occur due to the elevated pressure that was observed, but thanks to the medical assistance they were able to control the resulting pressures in time and stabilize the patient.
Author: Pete Linforth
The strange thing about the whole incident is that during the critical moment, my mother rambled in her thoughts and did not coordinate them coherently and consequently after 1 day of what happened, she still does not remember what happened, nor any detail of the scenario of violence that detonated the situation described above. Hence, the need to do this writing that allows me to answer the question "what happened? So that the brain blocked and suppressed that space of time to such an extent that there are no apparent memories of the scenario experienced.
Based on the above, it is appropriate to know that sometimes throughout our lives situations occur that generate very strong and intense emotions that produce psychological disorders, which is nothing more than shocks of an emotional nature that generate lasting damage on the unconscious of people.
So this type of disorders are the result of intense situations, where emotions overflow and consequently we are unable to control them, in the same way this type of event, also often appear by the accumulation of disturbing situations, so that we are exposed for long periods of time to these events and consequently our brain and emotional system is also altered producing emotional disorders that result in psychological problems.
Author: Małgorzata Tomczak
In both scenarios, the mechanism by which these events occur is emotional uncontrol, where the traumatic experiences are not integrated to our being and remain active and latent from our psychosomatic system, hence they are constantly repeated and projected in the form of worries or dysfunctional behaviors.
GENERAL INFORMATION ON THE MECHANISM OF PSYCHOLOGICAL DISSOCIATION
In the previous section, we analyzed the emotional behavior of a trauma or psychological disorder, however, based on the incident described in Edith's case, we can realize that the incident in her brain responds to the well-known mechanism of psychological dissociation, which is nothing more than a brain disconnection that occurs as a result of the presence of excessive pain, so that our mind activates this emergency and defense resource to prevent us from continuing to suffer and avoid further damage.
So the disconnection does not imply that the trauma does not exist, on the contrary, what was done was to erase the situation, although the sequelae in the brain will be present and is evident in the form of increased irritability, nightmares or insomnia, nervousness, anxiety, embarrassment, confusion and difficulty concentrating.
Consequently, dissociation serves as an adaptive mechanism that disconnects the mind from reality and is activated instinctively when we are at the limit of our emotional resistance or when it exceeds our emotional and psychological resources associated with coping with traumatic situations, so that it is a separation or safety distance that seeks to reduce the emotional impact, tension, fear and pain of the moment as much as possible.
Author: Tumisu
Neurologically in periods of dissociation there is a disconnection at the level of the anterior cortex, preventing the regulation of conscious behavior, here the amygdala, responsible for emotional control, executes the activation of cortisol release, which being a hormone inhibits the functioning of the hippocampus which is where we store our life history and experiences, likewise a kind of local anesthetic called opioids are activated, which are neurotransmitters that allow us to endure physical and emotional pain.
Hence, during the dissociation period, there is no evidence of pain symptoms at the gestural level and, consequently, it is difficult to remember the incident or scenario experienced.
FINAL CONSIDERATIONS
Undoubtedly, understanding the mechanism of dissociation made me identify part of the process experienced by my mother and although it was not a pleasant scenario, this information allows me to realize that the system reacted in this way, only as a warning measure to avoid much more serious problems.
Personally, I believe that if the psychological dissociation had not occurred, the events would have been catastrophic, since hypertensive dyscontrol would have generated a heart attack or, failing that, cardiovascular problems.
So through this information we realize the great variety of resources that our body has and that in opportune moments are activated as a mechanism to preserve the lives of people.
