The Australian National Football Team is governed by the Football Federation Australia. Originally a member of the Oceania Football Association, it became a member of the Asian Football Confederation on January 1, 2006. It has been a top-ranking team in Asia and won the first Asian Cup in the history of the national team in the Asian Cup in 2015.
Australia used to be a four-time leader in Oceania and participated in four World Cup finals in 1974, 2006, 2010 and 2014. The team's best performance in the World Cup was the 16th in 2006.
On November 15, 2017, in the second round of the Intercontinental Intercontinental Playoffs, Australia defeated Honduras 3-1 at home to beat its opponents to become the fifth Asian team to win tickets for the World Cup finals.
On December 1, 2017, the 2018 World Cup in Russia was grouped together. France, Australia, Peru, and Denmark were in the same group C.
