OLIVET DISCOURSE
THE SIGN OF HIS COMING
Matthew 24:23-31

We are in the middle of a series of lessons on Christ’s Olivet Discourse
• It is one of three main sermons recorded in Matthew
• It is very Jewish in its context and
• It is in answer to their question
Matthew 24:3 KJV
….. Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?

I have tried to express that the message is a description of the seven year Tribulation period and that the Tribulation is the sign of His coming.

But Jesus gets very specific with them in our passage today.

He says there will be false Christs
He says they will try to deceive the elect

And then He describes His return as
• Clear
• Public and
• Sudden

I like to use the testimony of the angels in Acts 1:10-11 KJV
And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;
Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

They saw Him go into heaven
• Bodily
• Visibly and
• Gradually

And the angels said that when He returns will be in “like manner”

• Bodily
• Visibly and
• Gradually

Matthew 24:29 gives us four descriptive phrases of His return
• First, the darkening of the sun;
• Second, the moon not reflecting its light;
• Third, stars falling from the sky;
• Fourth, a shaking of heaven powers.

I. THE SUN DARKENED
Matthew 24:29 KJV
Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, …

There are plenty of both Old and New Testament Scriptures to tell us that there will be a day when the sun is darkened.

Joel 2:10 KJV
The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble: the sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining:

Isaiah 13:10 KJV
For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.

Joel 3:15 KJV
The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining.

Revelation 8:12 KJV
And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.

God darkened the sun when Jesus was on the cross
Matthew 27:41-45 KJV
Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said,
He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.
He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.
The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.
Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.

God will do it again as a part of the sign that Jesus is coming again.

II. THE MOON DEADENED
Matthew 24:29 KJV
and the moon shall not give her light,

This makes sense to us because we understand that the moon merely reflects the light of the sun.

It has no light of her own, therefore, if the sun is darkened, the moon will be too.

I think it is a little premature to apply this verse here, because immediately after the Tribulation comes the Millennial kingdom; but some have suggested that this verse may point to
Revelation 21:23 KJV
And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.

When Jesus rules in eternity there is no need for the sun, moon or stars to shine.

Jesus will be both the light of it and the guide of it

III. THE STARS DIVING
Matthew 24:29 KJV
and the stars shall fall from heaven,
We are, of course, in the realm of speculation as to what all of this will be

A. Some people believe this will be like a meteor shower.
The stars don’t necessarily have to hit the earth, the passage does not say they fall to the earth, only that they fall from heaven.

B. Some believe it will be the passage is a reference to
Revelation 12:3-4 KJV
And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.
And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.

These are the angels that fell when they followed Satan in his pride against God

C. The Bible says when Jesus comes again He will be riding out of heaven with the armies of heaven following Him.

Millions of saints following Christ back to this earth would certainly look like a meteor shower!

IV. THE HEAVENS DREADING
Matthew 24:29 KJV
and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

Many students of the Bible trace this reference back to
Haggai 2:6-9 KJV
For thus saith the LORD of hosts; Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land;
And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the LORD of hosts.
The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the LORD of hosts.
The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the LORD of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the LORD of hosts.

I think it means that when Jesus returns to set up His 1000 year kingdom, the kingdoms of both
This world – the governments upon it and
The Satanic powers – Ephesians 6:12 KJV
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Daniel 2:34 KJV
Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces.

When Jesus comes again
Satan will be cast down
His Angels as well and the beast the false prophet and himself will be bound in the bottomless pit and

Christ will smash the kingdoms of this world
…as He rules and reigns with a rod of iron.
