I watched " The Season " so you don't have to.
I've been waiting for this series ever since the teaser was released on public almost a month ago. At the time, I didn't want to renew my VIU membership but because this particular series, "The Season", I decided to renew it.
The season is about the lives of Hongkong's elite circle and their summer getaway that start as something fun but turns into betrayal and power play. But I mean, as cliche as the topic sounds when we combine Hongkong's elite and summer, the scandals shown in the series are simply not that far from reality. What makes this series intriguing to me is that I really hope it offers fresher story and scandal tier like Nina Wang, who was once Asiaโs richest woman from Hongkong.
I have read Nina Wang's biography, been following some East Asian Billionaire and celebrities scandals. That is to say, "The Season" is the mildesy version of them all.
Directed by Yalun Tu, it features stars like Justin Chien and Lee Jae-yoon but also Jessie Mei Li, Chris Pang, and some other actresses that I have not heard about. In this series, Mei Li stars as Cola, the outsider who attempt to climb her way up to the Hongkong's most elite circle. She wanted to be a part of the group and with her own desire to topple the Hext Family, who was considered as " the family who practically invented colonialism " a.k.a old money of Hongkong.
During the "Boating" season which basically is their summer activity and getaway to decide who gets in and out of the circle. Throughout this season, they hold dinners and parties at the yacht with bankers, asset managers and even lawyers.
Each of the characters have their own scandals weaved into the story but still, Cola, the main character acts as the driver of the whole series. Her desire to topple the family was due to her past and I would say that the series left us hanging. It started as something exciting but as it progresses to the end, it becomes so sour.
" So, that's it?" - Right after I watched the last episode, I got disappointed. I expected the story to develop more and the pacing was off. There are many unexplained situations and plot holes throughout the series.
I felt like I wasted some hours of my life, hoping it would be a good one. At least the Crazy Rich Asians, they have ending that just right. It doesn't left us with too many questions. But I hoped that this series explored the scandals more and even the backdrop of the center character " Cola".
Would I recommend this series? Honestly, not really. But if you enjoy peeking into the ultra rich lifestyle and life of billionaire's and their scandals, go ahead.
