We recently went zip-lining in the Magaliesberg (historically also known as Macalisberg or as the Cashan Mountains) which is a mountain range roughly 1.5 hours drive from Johannesburg. Surrounded by these rolling hills is the town called Magaliesburg. You may have noticed that I used the word Magaliesburg and Magaliesberg. It is worth mentioning that in Afrikaans the word "burg" is the word used for town and "berg" is the word used for mountain.
The area is a popular holiday destination and well-known for its day spa's, lovely hotels, natural beauty and adventure activities.
The Sterkfontein Caves, close to Magaliesburg, is renowned for the findings of the remains of the earliest species of primitive man known to man today. The Magaliesberg area also saw the loss of many lives during the South African War (1899 - 1902).
One of the adventure activities in the area is zip-lining (aka Canopy Tours).
Canopy tours, which use a system of cables and platforms, originated in the lush rainforests of Costa Rica, allowing biologists to explore this previously inaccessible ecosystem.
I had done the canopy tour in Magoebaskloof and loved it. In my opinion, the scenery eclipsed that of the Magaliesberg, however, I found the guides on the Magliesberg tour much more informative when it came to the fauna and flora of the area.
Happy days =)
