Although Sepia tone became popular in the 1880s and early 1900s, more than a century later it still around. People still love the sepia tone and use it as a filter. I know I do!
Think of all the photo apps you installed on your smartphone; most of them included sepia. Why? Because it has not lost its magic!
Most of the people tend to believe that the sepia-tone is part of the natural aging process of the photos, while it is actually a deliberate effect. That means our great grandparents chose this tone of photographic print toning in order to make their photos last longer.
The Sepia tints can give an aged look to photos. Nowadays since most of the photos are digital, the effects of this aging process can be emulated by using an editing software.
Whenever you look at sepia toned photos, you feel the nostalgia of that moment when it was taken. The brown-tinted photos have that vintage look that make you travel back in time.
In the age of technology where smartphones have replaced couple of our gadgets, it is hard to picture that almost two decades ago, one had to wait for its photos to be processed in a photo centre.
Nowadays digital photography is available to anyone with a camera or a smartphone. Anyone can take a photo, use different filters and play around manipulating the saturation, hue, frequency of the digital file.
Did you know that the original process of sepia toning of a photo was done using an organic pigment made form the inky secretion of a cuttlefish which was later replaced by artificial toners that were quite toxic?
Thanks to the digital photography, photographers no longer need to use chemicals in the darkroom in order to get the sepia tones.
You will be surprised to learn that the Greco-Roman civilisation has used the sepia ink as writing ink. Later on it became a common drawing material until the 19th century, mostly for watercolor and oil paintings.
