If the USD collapses, this will only affect pegged Steem Dollars correct? Not underlying STEEM/STEEM Power!
I came across this blog today and it raises interesting questions:
https://cointelegraph.com/news/how-bitcoin-blockchain-and-ripple-may-help-kill-us-dollar
The point is about the use of USD in international trade. He says that because the rest of the world needs USD to carry out trade deals and keep it as a reserve currency, this creates a demand for USD unique among other currencies.
The article states that 50% of US dollars in circulation are outside of the the US as a result of this dominant reserve currency / trade status.
Thus, the US has a unique ability to continue printing/issuing currency without the full inflationary negative effect being felt by US consumers.
I presume he means that if the USD were not the exclusive international currency for trade, the government would not be able to continuously borrow and increase the money supply without a severe effect on the economy. If in future we find alternatives to the USD in international trade, would this cause a sharp drop in the value of the US dollar? Is it fair to say that if this were to happen, the value of Steem Dollars would also fall (as it is pegged to the USD), BUT the value of STEEM / STEEM Power would hold.
The article mentions a digital currency called Ripple that is designed for international trade, as well as potential collaboration among other countries to create alternative exchange systems to the USD one.
Interesting times ahead for the evolution of MONEY!
