I am very saddened to hear of your recent loss - from me, to Stephen's family
Thousands if not millions think that he was the greatest mind of our generation.
He died at the age of 76 after a long struggle with motor neurone disease.

Stephen Hawking lived decades longer than he was meant to. He was diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) when he was only 21 years old.
He was a gift for us

Obviously he had more theories and discoveries but those above are the most famous ones.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis Ice Bucket Challenge
If you don't know what ALS is then you should google about it but you probably know what is ALS Ice Bucket Challenge
You needed to be nominated by someone.
You had to throw a bucket of ice and cold water over a person's head.
You had to nominate other 3 people.
You had to film this and post it in social media.
And guess what? Stephen got nominated but because of the ALS he was only able to move a few of his muscles and the muscle's movement would send a signal to computer, where the letters and words were led out with speakers.
And this equipment and technology obviously costs a lot. So he asked his family to do the challenge for him.
