Well done! We have the exact same problem with snow. The building code requires that houses have roofs strong enough to hold many times more snow that there almost always is but snow guards are not required except over entrances in regular use. It's possible to get hit by literally tons of compacted snow and ice if one carelessly steps out the back door at the wrong time.
