I’ve seen Facebook’s fact check warning, but this is new to me to see it on Twitter also.
It’s a bad idea driven by good intentions.
And yes, I know of Brandolini's law, also known as the bullshit asymmetry principle.
To some it might make sense. “Stop the spread of lies and misinformation which threaten our democratic republic!” At closer glance, IMO, it cripples an important feedback loop we need to evolve our ability to think critically: shame and accountability.
We only gain new information about something when we learn we were wrong as demonstrated so well here:
I want people sharing misinformation to feel the shame of being wrong which may help them think twice next time before sharing.
I want individuals holding each other accountable, not outsourcing that important function to a centralized third party with misaligned interests. By adding warnings like this, how many people won’t go through the share, shame, evolve cycle?
Thinking for ourselves is key to improving our ability to exist in an increasingly complex world. We can’t let mommy and daddy tech company do it for us, or we truly will become compliant sheep.
Think.
Fact check.
Call out the BS.
