If you think marriage severely limits what you consider freedom, it’s possible you’ve only ever seen slightly to severely disfunctional marriages where the wife is dragged into (willingly or otherwise) the “mother” role for her man and the husband is either an adolescent masculine seeking to be mothered or one who isn’t adulting well enough to not require it. Well-functioning adults manage their responsilbities along with their wants and needs so as to compliment each other effectively. They know who they are, they know what they want, and they can articulate the reasonable, adult “why” for it all. If childhood trauma or unexamined, unhelpful limiting beliefs are still in the driver seat, some dysfunctional control issues may show up that do limit freedom. There’s also a common lack of not knowing what true freedom is which includes understanding yourself well enough to know what you actually want (and why) and obtaining it. Many don’t define success before they chase after it. Once they get what they think they want, they turn to chase something else, kind of like a child always needing a new toy. Being in a committed relationship can be truly freeing. I’d like for more people to see that and understand it.
