Hi,
My name is Luke Bray and I'm currently 22 years old. Here's my story:
I grew up in a small town in Georgia, USA. I had a pretty normal childhood. It consisted of sports, friends, church, and the great outdoors.
I tried to always stand up for what I believed to be right. I took up for my friends on the playground, even if the kid picking on them was twice my size. To me, it didn't really matter how big they were. I figured If you don't do what's right, your conscious will weigh on you far longer than any wounds will take to heal.
That mentality is still with me today. Everyone else seems to go with the flow and do what others are doing, even if that means going into a career that they're unhappy with. Not me.
But anyways, back to my story.
I graduated from high school with honors, and was immediately swept into college. I met some new people, joined a fraternity, and had a pretty good time. But I wasn't happy. I was doing what everyone else was doing.
Three years flew by and before I knew it, I was getting close to graduation. Suddenly I felt less ambitious about the future. I was about to get a degree and go into a field that I wasn't even sure I wanted to be in.
I realized I had been running my whole life. Trying to keep up with the pack, without even considering where the pack was headed.
I chose to take some time off. Take some time to find myself. Of course, everyone around me discouraged me from doing that. I wasn't worried about them. They were still in the pack of people headed for Destination Unknown.
Originally, I wanted to go into the military. But in all honesty, I'd probably be denied on account of my asthma.
I figured the next best thing was to become extremely successful. If I can't fight the enemy with a gun, I'll fight them with a paycheck.
However, the enemy isn't just someone overseas threatening your freedom. Some of your greatest enemies are all around you. Your professor, your boss, your friends, and even your family. Anyone who tells you that you can't do something is your enemy. Anyone who keeps you from reaching your full potential is your enemy.
I should know. For as long as I can remember, my mother has always pushed me to be average. She says things like, "Be realistic" "What do you know about business?" "You should get a job in THAT field. THAT'S where the money is." When I would tell her about my goals, she would laugh and say "yeah right". I don't know why she doesn't believe in me. I don't really care. I believe in me and that's all that matters.
I can't say that I blame her for wanting me to take the safe route. She grew up with nothing. I wouldn't consider her an enemy because I know that she cares for me. But I also know that she despises her job. It even causes her health problems. So it makes absolutely no sense for me to take a job like that. Still, she wants me to go back to college.
My dad, however, has been quite the opposite. He never went to college, but he's the smartest man I know. He has always pushed me to get college degree. But once I explained how it's not all that it's cracked up to be, and how it can actually hurt you more than it helps, he took my word for it. Since then, he's extremely supportive and always refers to me as a "future millionaire".
After I dropped out, I began reading books, taking online courses (not college), and meeting with people who were successful and truly happy.
By studying subjects that I was interested in, my mind became open to all of the possibilities.
I have been out of college for over a year and couldn't be happier. Not because I have a lot of money, but because I have found myself, which is something that no amount of money could buy.
I have friends who have graduated and gone into their full time jobs. And now they're asking themselves, "Is this really all there is to life? Work Monday through Friday, spend the weekend watching Netflix, then starting all over again?"
I can see it on their faces when I run into them. I wish I could show them all the possibilities out there.
I know that if I follow my passion, the money will follow. It feels amazing to wake up and not be on someone else's time. I can do and achieve what I want. The world is my playground!
I now have direction in life. I am passionate about the businesses I am starting. Which is great. Because I know that even if I fail, at least I failed doing something I love. If that happens, I'll simply pick myself up, dust myself off, and start again.
Old Man Failure will soon depart once he realizes how persistent you are.
Well, that's my story! I'm excited to be a part of this community and I can't wait to take you guys on this journey with me!
In the meantime, remember: if you're living someone else's life, then who's going to live yours?
