A few weeks ago we visited Pretville in Hartbeespoortdam (about 45 minutes outside Johannesburg, South Africa) and got a glimpse of what the 1950's were like.
Pretville is a movie set that was made for the Afrikaans movie called "Pretville" and they decided to keep it open as a tourist attraction in the holiday town of Hartbeespoortdam.
We paid R180.00 entrance fee for 2 adults and 1 child and it gave us half a day of entertainment. While inside their movies produced on that set is free of charge. We stayed for the 1 pm movie and watched their 2015 movie "French Toast".
My son enjoyed seeing "olden day" things and seeing how technology has improved in the last 70 odd years.
My hubby and I sneaked in a free smooch in the "Vry Hokkie" which is Afrikaans for the kissing cubicle.... My poor son may be scarred for life as we asked him to take the picture ;)
We ate lunch and enjoyed the most delicious double thick milkshakes in this typical movie set style Cadillac. My son thought this was just the coolest experience. They have a proper 1950's style diner where the waitresses were on roller skates and wore typical Rock n Roll style little outfits, but my son decided the Cadillac was much cooler. Don't you just love it when 7 year olds rule the roost?
Who doesn't love pretending to be Marilyn Monroe?
All in all, if you have spare cash and spare time, I can highly recommend the drive out to "Harties" and a morning in Pretville. Their milkshakes are heavenly and on any given day they show 2 different movies free of charge. These movies are mostly Afrikaans, so don't forget your reading specs as there are subtitles.
