"Hi Jeff", she said, perching on his desk.
"Hi Janet", The curtness of his reply, not forestalling her, she kept on.
"How was your weekend? Did you do anything fun?" He knew where this was going, and he hoped she would stop, but she seemed oblivious to the fact that he was busy.
"My weekend was fine", he said, still tapping his keyboard, and not looking up from his computer.
"That's it? Just fine?, You're such a bore, J, you never do anything fun", she said, feigning disappointment, when in fact, that was an opening for her, and as expected, she took it.
"Anyways, my weekend was great, and..."
"Wait!" he ordered, clicked save on the computer, and relaxed in his armchair, this was gonna take a while, he might as well settle in.
"Alright, continue", with eyes brightly lit up, she fired away.
"As I was saying, my weekend was great. You'll never guess where I went last night, a night club."
Trying to hide his surprise, "A night club, huh?"
"Yeah, that's right, I went clubbing last night, Oh my God, Jeff, you're not gonna believe it, I met this guy, he's so handsome, and tall, and we danced, like, can you imagine me dancing?
"No, Janet, but what can I say? Worse things have happened", his tone showing more sarcasm, than he meant to.
Undeterred, she went on, "So, we danced, and he bought me a drink, and we exchanged numbers, and he promised to call this morning, Jeff! Are you listening?"
"Of course, I'm listening, Janet, do I have a choice?"
Smiling, she asked "what do you think, Jeff? Do you think he'll call?"
How the hell, would he know something like that? "I don't know, Janet. I wouldn't get my hopes up, if I were you. You should've gotten laid when you got the chance."
Her disgust showing clearly on her face, she stood. "Why did you have to say something like that, you're such a jerk." With that, she walked away, her pride, wounded.
"Bring me some coffee, will you?" He called after her, glad that he'd been left alone to continue his work. Part of him felt guilty for spoiling her fun, but he knew she didn't take it to heart.
Janet, was a sweet girl, when she wasn't being talkative, and a pain in the ass. She'd been sharing this cubicle with him for months now, and he'd somehow become her buddy. She was keen on getting him to familiarize with the other colleagues, and " try be more fun" , as she'd put it. But asides her, he didn't really relate with anyone at the office, unless it was absolutely necessary.
He eyed the stack of files on his desk, and sighed, he knew today was gonna be a long day. One of those days, he questioned his decision to take this job, he needed the cash, he thought, answering himself.
