For those who don't know, https://shapeshift.io is a site for trading cryptocurrencies without requiring login. Well, not for much longer.
Apparently, shapeshift was building a member service, offering benefits for those who have registered for the service. However, due to regulators pressure, it seems it will require KYC*.
Anyone who has ever used shapeshift.io knows this proposal hurts the core business of the platform, but it doesn't end there. Shapeshift CEO has announced that, after some time, only member will be allowed to transact. He didn't seem happy about that, though.
It seems privacy cannot and will not be supported by most companies. Even if they resist, they might as well go bankrupt. However, if people at shapeshift.io really cares about privacy I think it might be a good opportunity to opensource shapeshift, so people can still setup services like this.
The community might have people who will be willing to continue and support the original proposal.
So folks, learn now: when threatened, opensource it.
