Why are people saying that they want to help and then help only those who they see will benefit them?

First of all, big shout out to those who are really helping. Keep it real. Now... Why do I see, again, that some people are here to help but only if it benefits them. Are we ''cursed'' as a species that we cannot do what we're ''programmed'' to - to work together?
