In general, Alentejo is a geographical, historical and cultural region, south of Portugal. Translated Alentejo means "beyond (além) the Tejo" (Tejo).
This region of Portugal is well known for its traditional polyphonic singing groups, which seem to be similar to those in Tuscany and Corsica.
The modern region of the Alentejo was formed from the medieval provinces and historical areas of the province of Extremadura and also from the parts of the Ribatejo, should have been around 1934. At that time, the term "Entre-Tejo-e-Guadiana" existed, which is now obsolete. In the past, this region of "Entre-Tejo-e-Guadiana" referred to about the same land area and also belonged to the Kingdom of Portugal.
The Alentejo and the Northern Algarve in general are still very undeveloped, as far as the eye can see large, empty areas of land, partly covered with olive and cork trees. There are also some hidden sand bays and secret surf spots. It is feasible to walk along these paths for days, camp on the beaches (although wild camping is not allowed in Portugal I have to inform you about this) and surf on different waves. The northern half is an unexciting strip of sand, but after the village of Sines you can see the bays, beaches and reefs. Compared to the north of Portugal, the waves here have lost some of their size.
The best time to surf here is from autumn to spring, but also in the summer time, whereby the waves can be small.
Anyway, it was a nice road trip and recommendable.

Em geral, o Alentejo é uma região geográfica, histórica e cultural, a sul de Portugal. Alentejo traduzido significa "além (além) do Tejo" (Tejo).
Esta região de Portugal é bem conhecida pelos seus grupos tradicionais de cantores polifónicos, que parecem ser semelhantes aos da Toscana e da Córsega.
A moderna região do Alentejo foi formada a partir das províncias medievais e zonas históricas da província da Extremadura e também das zonas do Ribatejo, deveria ter sido por volta de 1934. Nessa altura, existia o termo "Entre-Tejo-e-Guadiana", hoje obsoleto. No passado, esta região do "Entre-Tejo-e-Guadiana" referia-se mais ou menos à mesma área terrestre e também pertencia ao Reino de Portugal.
O Alentejo e o Norte do Algarve em geral ainda estão muito pouco desenvolvidos, tanto quanto se pode ver, grandes áreas vazias, parcialmente cobertas de oliveiras e sobreiros. Existem também algumas baías de areia escondidas e spots de surf secretos. É possível caminhar por estes caminhos durante dias, acampar nas praias (embora não seja permitido acampar selvagem em Portugal, tenho de o informar sobre isto) e surfar em ondas diferentes. A metade norte é uma faixa de areia pouco excitante, mas depois da vila de Sines pode-se ver as baías, praias e recifes. Em comparação com o norte de Portugal, as ondas aqui perderam parte do seu tamanho.
A melhor altura para surfar aqui é do Outono à Primavera, mas também no Verão, onde as ondas podem ser pequenas.
De qualquer forma, foi uma boa viagem de estrada e recomendável.

Doch was kann man noch alles zu der Gegend zu sagen eigentlich?
Allgemein ist Alentejo an sich eine geografische, geschichtliche und eben so kulturelle Region, südlich in Portugal. Übersetzt heisst Alentejo "jenseits (além) des Tejo" (Tejo).
Diese Region von Portugal ist für die traditionellen mehrstimmigen Gesangsgruppen wie es scheint recht bekannt, welche denen auf der Toskana und auf Korsika ähneln.
Die moderne Region des Alentejo wurde aus den mittelalterlichen Provinzen und historischen Gebieten der Provinz Estremadura und auch aus den Teilen des Ribatejo zusammengefügt, sollte so gegen 1934 gewesen sein. Damals gab es den Begriff "Entre-Tejo-e-Guadiana", welcher nun veraltet ist. Früher bezog sich diese Region des "Entre-Tejo-e-Guadiana" auf etwa die selbe Landfläche und zählte ebenfalls zum Königreich von Portugal.
Der Alentejo und allgemein die Nordalgarve sind auch heute noch sehr unerschlossen, so weit das Auge reicht erblickt man grosse, leere und mit teils Oliven- und Korkbäumen bewachsene Landflächen. Ebenso gibt es einige versteckte Sandbuchten und geheime Surfspots. Es ist machbar, für Tage, diese Wege entlang zu gehen, an den Stränden zu zelten (obgleich Wildcamping in Portugal untersagt ist, kurz an dieser Stelle angemerkt) und auf unterschiedlichen Wellen zu surfen. Die nördliche Hälfte ist ein unaufregender Sandstreifen, doch nach dem Ort Sines erblickt man die Buchten, Strände und Riffe. Im Vergleich zum Norden Portugals haben hier die Wellen etwas an Größe eingebüßt.
Am allerbesten kann man hier vom Herbst bis zum Frühjahr surfen, doch auch im Sommer, wobei die Wellen dann halt klein sein können.
Es war jedenfalls ein schöner Roadtrip und empfehlenswert.
