Confused, as they start to realize a career was a means to an end, not the end itself.
Let down, as their assumption of new roles means others are free to divest of those roles.
Women, for men the career was traditionally a means to an end, the end being a strong family that had the resources it needed. A real man does not gauge his worth by money or career, but by the impact he has on the world. Sometimes those line up, but not always.
You aren't in the wrong for wanting your own success, but if the cost of that success means a weaker family the point is lost. If you want to have kids, success should be gauged in their care and strength. It will be exceedingly rare to have a high-powered career, a tight-knit strong family, and a perfect husband in just one shot at life.
Stop constantly trying to trade up, regardless of how wealthy or handsome a man is, he will still want to be an individual, he will still want time away, and will still scratch his scrotum/forget the toilet seat.
