I've always just had issues with the non-numerical nature of the FFG stuff. My players are allergic to reading (and therefore painfully slow to pick up on what the symbols meant) and I never found it as easy as numbers.
I've always been partial to Degenesis (given that SMV hired me to write a third of one of the books for it), with its flat "4+ is a success, 6 is a bonus on top" that's very much like Wrath and Glory, though Degenesis came first.
I'd say the D&D streamlining is not a bad analogy for this system. I think I come out a little sleeker than they do because it's a GURPS-style threshold versus a result vs. DC system. That's only a real positive when you've got Symbaroum style player-centric rolls (because it can give the GM a real data collection headache if they're rolling dice for people attacking PCs), but since combat and other situations are going to be a "roll to evade threats" system rather than a "they attack your threshold" system that should be fine.
