I think that it is so easy to manufacture desire within us because it's human nature to lust for things. But, I also think that the reason we are so quick to bite is because we would rather do the easy thing and go for what we want rather than what we will.

I have found that we can have a million desires, but only one will - and often our desires directly contradict our will. But, given the current state of the world, it too often seems a lot easier to go what we desire than to try the seemingly impossible task of shooting for what we will for the world. The former at least provides us with temporary gratification, which helps us to feel a little better about the over-arching failure of not accomplishing what we wish for the most.

I believe the architects of modern society understand very well the relationship between our desires and our will, and have exploited it expertly.
