Those of you who have followed my posts so far have probably noticed that I have a bit of a passion for street art.. .and Berlin!
If you yourself are interested in either of those 2 subjects you simply must make sure to visit the East Side Gallery.
This incredible permanent gallery has been dubbed an 'international memorial for freedom', and consists of 105 paintings from international artists, painted in 1990 and covering a 1316m section of the east side of the Berlin wall.
Most famous of the works is arguably Dmitri Wrubel's 'Mein Gott Hilf Mir, Diese tödliche Liebe zu überleben' (My God, Help Me to Survive This Deadly Love), based on the famous photograph taken by Regis Bossu in East Berlin on October 7, 1979. The photograph depicts Leonid Brezhnev and Erich Honecker in the 'fraternal kiss' while Brezhnev was visiting East Germany to celebrate the anniversary of its founding as a Communist nation.
The gallery is situated near the centre of Berlin on Mühlenstraße in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, and is possibly the largest permanent open air gallery in the world.
As well as being visually stunning, the works document an era of change and optimism for a freer and improved future.
