I started my walk in the charming village of Alfriston, known for its historic buildings and quaint tea shops. As I strolled through the village, I couldn't help but notice the beautiful 14th-century church, St. Andrew’s, which has such a rich history and adds to the character of the area. The village also has some lovely pubs where you can grab a local ale – I made a note to return for that!
As I made my way onto the trail, I encountered some fantastic views over the Seven Sisters cliffs, which are truly a sight to behold. The sight of the chalky white cliffs contrasting against the deep blue of the English Channel was magnificent. I stopped to take a few photos and breathe in the salty sea air; it felt refreshing and invigorating.
Along the way, I met a few fellow walkers, including a retired couple from London who were on a walking holiday. They shared stories about their travels through the countryside and we chatted about the best local pubs to visit. It’s always nice to meet fellow history buffs who appreciate the beauty of England’s landscape as much as I do.
One of the highlights of the walk was passing by the iconic Beachy Head lighthouse. The cliffs are a significant landmark and have important maritime history, with many shipwrecks having occurred in the area. It was fascinating to imagine what the sea must have looked like centuries ago with ships navigating these waters.
As I completed my walk for the day, I felt a sense of fulfillment and connection to the history and natural beauty surrounding me. Each step along the South Downs Way was like walking through a living history book, and I look forward to sharing more about my adventures as I continue exploring this wonderful country.
