This from the year I left school - the cutting edge at the time (although most of this technology would be obsolete within 5-10 years). When I actually started working in offices, word processing was still the domain of the typing pool. My work involved moving pieces of paper around - opening mail, photocopying, filing, taking outgoing mail to the post office. The young women you see here, if they continued working, will be thinking about retirement.
That's how long ago it is... and how recent.
Haven't been out today because of the weather warning for Storm Eunice from this morning. That's not quite true, I went out into the back garden first thing to put away the garden furniture and move some pots that might have been blown over. And at lunchtime, I spotted that a neighbour's wheelie bins had been blown into the road. Cars coming along weren't stopping, just driving around them (!) so I popped out and put the bins behind the fence (it's a house where I think the people aren't living just yet, they're doing it up first).
Because I didn't go out, I was OK to do Tuttle for the full two hours for once. Good conversations as always, art, crypto, VR, Meta, what work we're doing and why we wouldn't do certain things. Also a nice thing about how creative, collaborative work gets done and needs face to face, some interesting insights about the importance to some people of having seen someone face to face before they can comfortably work with them. But always the caveat that not all people are the same and not all companies are the same and it's really difficult to understand what's going on across the board, we just have lots of little snapshots from which we're drawing inferences (and we don't know how skewed they are by sample size).
I saw someone writing about a roadtrip they did from Austin, TX to Florida via New Orleans. So I lost a chunk of day looking at photographs and tweets from the time I got a ride from New Orleans to Austin as part of a coast-to-coast trip across the US. The rest of the trip was by Amtrak, but the only way from NO to Austin by train is via Chicago (a trip I have done but not on this occasion). An issue with it is the disparate methods of recording and note-taking that I used - now-dead blogging systems and just little snatches of ideas along the way. One day I'll make something out of it all (other than y'know my life!)
