Galernaya Street in St. Petersburg is the second oldest after Petrovskaya Embankment. It originated in the Galley Yard, as a number of houses in the area on the banks of the Neva were called at that time, from which this part of the city began to be built. Mostly mansions and palaces of the nobility are located here, and their technical facades with entrances to courtyards look at the Gallery, so there is not a single tree throughout its kilometer-long length. What is generally inherent in old St. Petersburg.
And this is my favorite street in St. Petersburg. Now we'll just look into one of the courtyards. This will be house No. 43. This is the only house and yard where I have access.
The only thing I don't like here is that someone constantly glues some ads on the gate, which are constantly cleaned off behind them, creating an even more untidy appearance. But if we pass this, we get into a very clean and well-groomed courtyard.
In St. Petersburg, they like this yellow color, because it warms up in cold and damp, which is normal weather here. And in a short light period, it adds warm light to everything.
In this courtyard, I am most interested in the old cast-iron balconies and other such things that have been preserved from the first days of the life of these houses, since the beginning of the 18th century.
I especially like the supports. For three hundred years, they, for all their elegance, have been holding the cast-iron lace of the balcony and will stand for the same amount of time.
There is nowhere for trees to grow in this small courtyard, but hollyhocks always grow on a small lawn. It was the last one that year.
The northern, ceremonial facade of this house looks at the English Embankment, as well as other houses on the odd side of Galernaya Street. And here, too, I see exactly the same artistic cast iron as in the courtyard.
A lot has already been written about the history of this street and about its famous inhabitants of different classes and occupations, and therefore I did not want to touch on this topic. Just a narrow street in an ancient city, just a yellow courtyard with preserved architectural elements and just my kind attitude to all this. Now just people live in this house.
