Anyone who is heading to Assisi by train can not bypass this town, since the nearest railway station to Assisi is located here. And this is good, because in addition to the station, there is the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli. Hidden in the middle of a huge basilica (again a "house within a house" as in the Sanctuary of Santa Casa in Loreto, which I wrote about recently) is a small chapel of Porziuncola, closely associated with the life path of St. Francis of Assisi. Here the saint lived with his followers, here he founded the first Franciscan monastery, and here he spent the last years of his life. Visit the basilica on the way to Assisi - St. Francis himself ordered.
