Chinguetti has suffered more from time (and sand) than Ouadan. But his mosque is still in operation (due to which, according to Moorish traditions, only a Muslim can get inside) and its minaret, the symbol of the Republic of Mauritania, is considered the second oldest minaret in the world in continuous use.
