We escaped our rat-race, oppressive life in South Africa about 3 years ago, and haven't looked back. We were in Rwanda for a couple of years; then, when covid hit, we saw what was coming with all the lockdowns and restrictions (we are in the hospitality industry 😖), and moved ourselves to Zanzibar. Perhaps you can also put it on your list of places to visit, as it is VERY affordable, very geared up for back-packers especially, very laid back, and restrictions here have been absolutely minimal (you can't even buy face masks here yet).
