Yes, the mosquitos love to find areas where there is some still water. - dragon flies love to eat them so am always happy to see them in the garden.

I think ferns can tolerate quite a bit of water - as for watering from the bottom, that is fine - my late dad -in law used to grow the lovely african violets and also only watered from the bottom but was

Good rains or heavy watering can help to leach the soil - then I would let it go fallow for a while and then mulch with compost.

Yes I have experienced that type of heavy snow when I stayed with an aunt in Derbyshire -it was so bad that the newspapers had the headline "Derbysiberia" - thanks for reading my post.
