On the 25 of August, my brother did his wedding, it was the first wedding I have ever engaged in the preparation and also the first wedding my family did. We had no knowledge of how exactly it needed to be done and it affected us.
Honestly, we were not prepared, it was three months before the wedding when we actually realized that we had not been planning, although, left to us we were not ready for marriage, it was the wife that was being impatient, not so impatient because the courtship has been about 6years, a lot this was putting pressure on us as there is no planned money.
Actually, we planned on doing it as small as possible, we didn’t even choose to cook food together with the bride’s family as we were not going to invite many people. The list given to us as dowry was about 400 thousand naira which is about $410.
Funnily enough, even though we planned small and didn’t invite many people, we spent so much that I wonder how much we would have spent if we planned medium and not even big. People who we didn’t invite complained, some didn’t even know that my bro had a wedding till now, hehe.
We had the court wedding, the traditional wedding, the church wedding, and even the reception.
The new house rent, the photography, the food, the clothes, the dowry, the transportation, the hall.. etc. was about 1.5 million naira or if not more which is about $1530. Wedding is a lot apart from all this money, we were still so stressed.
This little story of mine is to show that a wedding can be so stressful and expensive. Now, with this experience, if I were to plan my wedding, I would probably love something classic and well-planned.
Honestly, I don’t really mind having a nice wedding and a classic one if I am rich, of course, I’ll be rich by then. I really love a decent and organized wedding and one to be remembered for good not a wedding that is not shoddy.
Firstly, I’d love to cut down the list given to the groom's family, because I am not for sale, it is a culture and I don’t think I can’t totally eradicate it but I’d love to make it very affordable.
Also, I would not in any case or form have my wedding outside, never. Not in a field, not in my family house. I’d not love to have my wedding where it is exposed or where random people would be or can be. It is usually something that irks me when I am walking down the street and I’ll see a wedding ceremony going on. I can’t even be comfortable in a place like that.
I would also love to make my wedding exclusive, like only those who are invited, would be allowed to enter. I had this discussion with someone a few months ago and she said it is not a good thing to do, that it is a stingy act and I should allow people to come and celebrate, I made her understand that everyone has their preferences.
Nigeria and parties they are like 5 and 6, anywhere there is a party, food, and vibe, people would uninvitedly come, which is literally annoying. I have seen a lot of parties, where uninvited people come to a party just to eat, some even cause chaos and fight for no reason, even some that are invited will bring all the family members, hehe. Am I Father Christmas?
The funniest thing is that the ones that were invited would not even see food to eat, they would just eat and stress you without dropping a dime or a gift. It is so draining, so why should I allow that?
I would send out invitations to those who I think are fit for my wedding, no invitation-no entry, my guests would be so comfortable and not choked up, and they would be served well, enjoy the party well and they would have enough food.
This made me remember how many wedding I or my family or friends has gone to and I or they came back hungry, lol, and being treated scrappy
I would love my wedding to be simple and classic, everything should be well prepared according to budget. I don’t really care whether the budget is high or low. I just want my wedding to not have any mess up.
I don’t really support too much spending but spend according to your pocket because there are a lot of expenses after the wedding. So it depends on how rich I am or how rich my husband is.
P.S: marriage is the real deal, a wedding is just for a day. So don’t stress too much about the wedding, I’ll just do it according to my pocket and make sure I have the same amount or more money than I spent on your wedding as savings.
