Life is like a journey filled with many changing scenes; sometimes mundane, sometimes scary, but the very best is when we experience memorable moments with kindred spirits.

I have been immensely blessed to have been born into a family where love and respect for individuality were foremost; money was a scarce commodity but we lived a good life. Annual holidays took us on many road trips, where we saw much of the coastline of South Africa.
Swimming, sunbathing – yes horror of horrors, we did that back then, making sand castles, looking for treasures from the ocean in the sand, seashells and pebbles in all shapes and sizes, fishing, body-boarding, making bonfires on the beach, and of course the holiday romances that followed as we grew up.

Many, many, wonderful moments are etched in my mind.

As a teen I one night slept with Mom's wedding ring stuck inside a piece of wedding cake, under my pillow. The belief was that I would dream about the man I would one day marry ;)

I was very disappointed the next morning, as I did not dream about anything that night. I forgot about that wedding ring stuck in the cake, and the lady who worked for us at the time, was a dear old soul, but she liked sneaking a tipple or two early in the morning. She put the piece of cake in a drawer, and totally forgot about it.
I was beside myself when I got home from school as I could not find Mom's wedding ring.

My Dad was like a gentle big teddy bear, consoled me, and said he would take me to the jewelry store on Saturday and we would pick out a new wedding ring for Mom.

I discovered the original ring weeks later, and that's how Mom Lily ended up wearing two wedding rings right to the very end of her life.

Years later, when I met the man of my dreams and he took too long to ask for my hand, I impulsively said to him on one date…

So when are you going to ask me to marry you?

He was taken aback, and said…

Just give me a chance, I want to do it properly.

Those were the days when the young suitor had to ask for his beloved's hand, quite a nerve-wracking ordeal as some fathers would warn the ardent young man that he'd better look after his daughter, or else there would be trouble in the land!

He did do it properly after getting the nod from my Dad and made me the happiest and luckiest woman for many many moons.

I still blush when I remember that, had not told anyone except my bestie, just after losing my soulmate a month ago.
The secret is out now, but I knew I had picked the best!

We spent nearly half a century together, a lifetime, yes, and one filled with an abundance of wonderfully memorable moments.

The pain of my loss gets overwhelming at times, but I am so fortunate to have found the perfect virtual haven for storing many special moments here on Hive for the past seven years, something my children, and hopefully their children (I'm still not a Grandma!) can read about, at the click of a button.

Treasure those precious moments in your life because...

Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment
until it becomes a memory.
