I shared a beautiful Church Model that my very special cousin Brenton designed and built; a young man who managed to overcome the odds despite medical professional naysayers.
Brenton is a deep thinker with amazing intuition; in fact his parents say he has taught them many life lessons.
He learned his carpentry skills from a young age as that was his father's specialty; they not only did restoration work in many of the old Karoo homes, but also manufactured oval and round wooden picture frames using a unique technique which was passed on to younger tradesmen as my uncle got older.
So it happened one day after laying wooden flooring while restoring an old home that they were left with a huge stack of beautiful Oregon wood, much to the delight of 23 year old Brenton, whose vivid imagination immediately started planning huge projects with this wood in his quiet pensive manner.
The family lived in a beautiful typical flat roof Karoo style home in the town of Graaff Reinet for many many moons; a building that was declared a national monument and beautifully restored by my uncle and his workers when Brenton was still a young boy.
I will tell you more about the history and restoration of this home in a future post.
One wing of the home was turned into a gracious BnB called Kambro Cottage which Brenton's Mom ran for many years.

Bren was planning a Gazebo to fill an empty space in the garden. This was to become a beautiful retreat for Bren and his wandering thoughts, but also served as a gathering place when the scorching sun was at its worst; ask anyone who has visited this region about the intense heat of the Karoo in mid-summer.
This apparently was my grandfather's wish for many years; something he sadly never got to see.
All ideas and images were pooled and Bren reminded my uncle of a rather large Gazebo they had seen on their travels; that one however was a twelve-seater, twice the size of the one he planned.
My uncle was cajoled into getting on with the job in haste; and in the blink of an eye two bars of white chalk were used up on the workshop floor when Bren did his drawing consisting of a hexagon within a circle, and as my uncle put it...
simple and clear with no margin for arguments to derail the project.
My uncle's experience and years in college came to good use and the Gazebo plans were drawn to accommodate 6 persons quite comfortably and then the cutting, screwing and hammering started; a process that took a couple of weeks as they were running their picture frame manufacturing business at the time.

A while after this Brenton had the urge to fill the gazebo void with a similar design and later on an even smaller cabinet model for display in the home. He tackled this job on his own, and this is the results...
This Gazebo model stands approximately 800mm high.
He was not happy with all the odd woods that he used, so gave this model a coat of paint.
The smaller varnished model with its fine detail is my favourite and is approximately 360mm high.
Lesson learned from Brenton and his parents is to never say never, not simply give up because the experts said so, but to draw on that inner strength and believe that love, faith and encouragement can overcome all.
