Have you ever had an accident that turned into a blessing in the end?
I'm sure many of you are nodding your heads up and down?
Recalling memories from the past, made me think of the number of times that a mishap actually turned into something positive.
The first one involved my Mom Lily who I've been speaking of lately as she went to her forever home, as she called it.
My spunky Mom was still painting walls at the age of 70, and also loved moving furniture around.
So much so, that Dad's brother, who had a wicked sense of humour, one day said that Dad never knows which side of the room he was waking up to as Lily likely would even turn the bed around while he was asleep :)
Mom wanted to repaint our kitchen, but we warned her not to do it when alone, but she was disobedient! She called me at work to say she had an accident, but would not say what happened, so I raced home in a panic as I thought she had hurt herself.
She nervously asked me to come into the kitchen and pointed to the glass-top stove, which now was in thousands of pieces. She had covered it with newspaper to stop paint spills but forgot about the glass top, so stood on it and everything started shattering underneath her feet, but she thankfully kept her balance!
That's when I got a brand new stove with a thermo-fan oven that baked beautifully!
We had a good laugh about that accident afterward!
How could this turn into a bonus?
Well, it did, and into a very big one!
I twisted my ankle one morning while rushing out the front door; the cause was a loose brick on a temporary pathway.
We all know that temporary often becomes permanent!
Hubby felt really guilty and in no time planned a low retaining wall and decorative walls to level the area out for proper paving.
This was done speedily as he found excellent craftsmen to do the work.
The external home improvements continued, as the paving looked so good that he decided to upgrade the paving in the back courtyard. That was not enough, as the driveway now looked awful, so he had retaining walls built to spruce up the driveway with brick paving and ended up installing new fencing!
Thankfully I sat with my feet up during all this work, took copious amounts of pain killers and anti-inflammatories, till I had an allergic reaction to the anti-inflammatories!
As hubby is a civil engineer (retired now), of course meant the job would be more complex than I thought - foundations with steelwork like no other, a drainage system that collects water from the roof and runs into two giant soak pits. I think they would make excellent bomb shelters, during the dry season of course :)
I still have my moon boot and crutches as souvenirs but keep them in the deepest recesses of my cupboard as it was a very painful and frustrating period for me!
All the home improvements were a bonus though, as it really spruced our property up, making it much easier when we started our BnB!
The story does not end there though...I got a brand-new kitchen to boot...and it all started with an ankle fracture!
