In Taiwan, Starbucks is also seen as a status symbol, they're around 30% more expensive than local independent places for the basic coffee, though for hand drip coffee the local places could be a little more expensive than Starbucks.
Some European cities disallow Starbucks or global chain presence claiming they don't serve "real coffee". I think maybe they do that also to protect local small businesses, which makes perfect sense
