The title may sound like some kind of science fiction but I can show you that it's actually pretty simple to recognize those different realities in your daily life.

What you see, what you hear, feel and smell is real to you. But is this the only reality? The one you're living in? And if not, how many realities are there?

Just think about this very simple situation:

A wife is telling her husband that she's feeling really cold. And her husband answers "What are you talking about? It isn't cold!".
And here you already have two different realities. Which one is true? Both of course!

Try this

There's also another great experiment where you can recognize two different realities not only between two people but also within one person.
I guess some of you have heard some day about the experiment with the three bowls of water. It's very simple:

You take three bowls and fill water inside. In the first one hot water, in the second one ice cold water and finally in the third one which you place in the middle lukewarm water.
Then you put one hand into the hot water and your other hand into the cold water and keep them inside for about 1 minute.
After that you take both hands and put them into the lukewarm water at the same time. Both of your hands will feel different although it's the same temperature.

If you haven't tried this before I can recommend you to do so and promise you will be surprised.

The two different levels of reality

You can learn from this experiment that there are two different levels of reality. Realities of level 1 are some kind of facts which everybody agrees with.
Like when you say for example that it's 10 degrees Celsius outside. As long as your thermometer is working properly you can't deny.
But when you go outside is 10 degrees Celsius warm or cold for you? And that's where reality level 2 comes into play which is our personal subjective feeling.

And this does not only work for feelings but also for opinions. Every time when somebody says sentences like

"You see this wrong!"
"This doesn't exist!"
"You misunderstood me!"

that's where you can see the different realities we're all living in.

Refusing to accept other realities

With statements like the ones just mentioned you're refusing to accept your counterpart's reality. What you are saying interpersonal is "Your opinion, your feelings, your reality is wrong, mine is correct!". Communication will suffer from statements like these and they can also be the beginning of an argument.

A good tip to prevent a conversation from escalating would rather be to ask this person why he's actually thinking that his reality is correct.
You might come to a conclusion which everybody agrees with. But sometimes you won't so why not simply agree to differ instead of always trying to persuade others from your own opinion.

What's your thought about this? Tell me in the comments below. I would enjoy to have a little discussion with you about that.
