Hello to the great family of this Hive Cuba, I hope you are all well and ready to continue dreaming and creating excellent content on this page.
These days, the constant support that friends and acquaintances have given us continues to serve as energy and pillar in such difficult times that the east of the country experienced, mainly in the region of Palma Soriano, Baire, Los Negros and Contramaestre, places where light and creativity flourished in people. I imagine that many of those who follow the official pages on social networks, friends and artists were able to observe the disaster caused by the typhoon or known in the Caribbean as Hurricane. Melissa was the name she was given at birth, which began as a simple tropical storm and ended up becoming an unstoppable beast of Mother Nature. His strength came to change the lives of many of us, our mood and future life or artistic projects. It never occurred to people that it would cause such a disaster. Cuba, due to its geographical position, has already had to face destructive beasts but not like this.
Since October 21, it had already been sighted and the population was informed that there was irrigation but not of such magnitude. We already have experience, I have seen other hurricanes with my own eyes since I was little, but even so what I would see after the storm did not cross my mind for a second.
I am going to tell you from my experience the night that for me was day 0, yes a day 0 for many here in the East.
For days before I had been preparing conditions, supplies and securing the house, tying the roof, closing the doors and blinds with boards, nails, seeing the weakest points of the little house, logically assuming according to the report the force of the wind from where it would come, removing tiles that would not withstand the force of the wind so as not to cause damage to the neighbors and collecting the few belongings that my grandmother had left me with my sacrifice, the clothes and the books that are my great treasure, when I thought that everything was ready, I I began to help others who needed my strength and sweat, I left everything ready on the afternoon of the 26th and took refuge in a house with my family.
It was still 7:00 pm on October 27 when only small breezes of what was coming were felt, only small drizzles and pleasant temperatures, the conditions already prepared as our economy allowed us, between the nerves and the smiles of the bad jokes I decided to take out my guitar and sing some songs to calm down because we did not know with pressure when I was entering or when I would leave the municipality. At 11:00 pm we could already feel the wind with not very strong gusts and intense rain, but it all started at 2:00 am when my brother and I felt a loud knock on the door and we jumped out of bed. Under my feet what I found was water like a river inside the house. After 210 km the blinds would not be torn off, so we stayed until 4:20 am when we took out some gigantic bald heads with mandarria to fix the frame again to the wall because it was being torn off, so the two of us with the last of our strength, soaked, managed to hold on.
In the calm of the eye I could hear people shouting, picking up their belongings and neighbors calling others to take shelter from what was still missing and I decided to go out quickly to see how the conditions of my little house were, with the hope of seeing it at least standing with each step.
Already at 7 am the cell phone began to ring, friends and family calling and I only gave the bad news, I called a friend and now we began to collect what was still salvageable in the rain, in my mind came the houses of my friends that were in the same conditions as mine, I thought of the peasants, of those on the hill and those who had their four walls in the river plain, also of those who lived alone. Everything was a storm of ideas and helplessness.
13 days have already passed and you can still see the disaster in the streets, the tired faces, the desperation of help that does not arrive, in the drinking water that is contaminated, in the lack of energy and supplies, in the lack of response and the friends who in the distance also suffered the ravages and in the diseases that the vectors are causing throughout the country and mainly in the areas where the cyclone passed.
But nothing, we continue to have dreams in our pockets and with the hope of living and creating, I am eternally grateful to all the friends who have called me to find out how my family is and those who were affected, thank the friends of the community who have given their helping hand that no matter how much they see that it is not enough for me, it is too much to just call me every day to know my status and that of my grandmother, thanks to you Hive Cuba.
