The monochromatic effect on photographs can elicit a great atmospheres reminiscent of old times. Given that I only recently began experimenting with black and white photography, I still have much to learn about properly working with exposure settings in varying light conditions, but sometimes it works out for the #monomad challenge.
This scene is from downtown Montreal, where several players were enjoying a chess match with oversized pieces. The light is not particularly great, but this works in its favour by creating that old timey-wimey feel, as often found in old photography.
Beyond the technical aspects of the images, I appreciate how this kind of scene is still possible in a large city. We often hear about the mayhem going on, and believe me there's plenty, but you know what, there are still many streets where the best of our humanity shows up and games on.
