“Hey Annie,” Laura says looking over the cubicle wall, “up for some drinks tonight?”
Annie shakes her head. “Gotta finish some prototypes.”
“I don’t understand why you refuse to use the generator,” says Laura in a low voice, her eyes darting around. “Your work will go much faster and better.”
“Are you saying a piece of software is better than I am?" Laura crosses her arms indignantly. "Besides, I don’t think it’s ethically right.”
Laura sighs. “What are you working on?”
“Earbuds," Annie says slumping in her chair. "I’ve got to come up with some concepts, but I’m drawing a blank. We need something that breaks the mold. Something new and innovative, you know the usual buzzwords. Maybe that’s the problem. All these cheesy marketing terms they throw at me, some of them are bound to stick and destroy my creativity. Things used to be so much easy.”
“Oh yea, like when?”
Annie laughs. “I don’t know, just in the old days?”
“Like Gothic times?”
"Yes, Laura, Gothic times sounds great. I hear they wore cool earbuds with swirls and stuff back then."
“How about this then, design some earbuds as if you’re designing them for a customer who lives in the Gothic era. Heck, you can go down all historical periods of design. Weren't you going on about it the other day?”
“Oh, you're so sweet. You were listening."
"Doesn't mean I care," says Laura, "but maybe that could spark up the ole hamster up there, so we can get out of here and go find us some boys."
Laura taps her head with her stylus. "That’s not a bad idea, but it would take me forever.”
“Oh god! Honey, if you’re not done by five-thirty PM, I’m gonna slap you with that tablet. Now get back to work.”
Laura swivels in her chair and looks out the window at the city, the grand ocean beyond lined with snowcapped mountains on the horizon, and the great expanse of blue sky.
The clock is ticking, and there is still a blank screen on her desk.
